Dozens of acts scheduled to seem at the South by Southwest (SXSW) competition in the United States have withdrawn in an act of protest against sponsors with ties to Israel’s war in Gaza.

As of Wednesday, at least 80 artists and panellists have pulled out of the 9-day competition, citing the involvement of numerous weapons corporations and agencies tied to the US Office of Protection, according to the Austin for Palestine Coalition, which aided organise the protest.

The celebration, billed as a “convergence of tech, film, audio training and culture”, is amid the most distinguished leisure festivals in the southern US.

Using spot every calendar year in Austin, Texas, the competition has been a launchpad for up-and-coming indie acts and filmmakers since its opening in 1987. This year’s competition will conclude on March 16.

In announcing its withdrawal this week, Northern Ireland hip-hop trio Kneecap highlighted the prices smaller acts would incur by missing the large-profile function.

Nonetheless, the festival defended the artists who selected not to take part in this year’s competition, responding immediately to Governor Abbott’s comments.

“SXSW does not agree with Governor Abbott,” SXSW wrote on social media on Tuesday. “We entirely regard the selection these artists created to exercising their right to totally free speech.”
