“This is a genuine story,” declares Netflix’s latest hit exhibit Toddler Reindeer. 

The visceral, complicated tale of stalking and sexual violence that unfolds is based on the ordeals of 34-yr-previous Scottish comic Richard Gadd, its star and creator. The seven-episode sequence, woven all over with dim humour, has sparked critical acclaim and Emmy excitement in equivalent evaluate, gaining over 13mn views, and a world viewers.

But it has also unleashed tales of net stalking and harassment as armchair detectives attempt to unearth the genuine identities of people depicted in the thriller-drama. West Midlands police said this week they had been investigating experiences of “threatening messages” despatched to one particular personal. Born in Fife, Scotland, Gadd’s first desire was in acting, sparked by lecturers he described as “inspirational, . . . [they] went previously mentioned and beyond”. At 15, he was cast in the title purpose of Macbeth, a performance praised in his school publication as “wonderfully physical” — anything that nevertheless defines his do the job.
